Why Use Massage For Headaches?

Label: ,

Many people suffer regular and intensive pain from headaches but once the cause can be determined there maybe a solution to counteract the paralysing effect that they have on life. Reaching for the medicine cabinet maybe alright for those with the occasional trouble, but those with regular and intensive headaches, the causes and natural cures should be examined.
In general, it is difficult to pinpoint the precise cause of an infrequently occurring muscle tension or vascular headache, but sometimes the anatomy of the headache-how it starts, where the pain is felt, and how long it lasts-provides valuable clues about its source.
Originally, it was accepted that there were just two simple explanations to thew source of headache pain. Vascular, such as migraines, occurred when blood vessels that supplied the brain and muscles of the head and neck dilated or were constricted. Tension headaches were thought to result from the tensing and contracting of muscles of the head, face, and neck in response to physical stress, such as injury or emotional distress.
However, it is now understood that there are complex chemical changes in the brain associated with pain. Tension headaches are associated with neurochemicals in the brain -varying levels of serotonin, endorphins and other chemicals that serve as neurotransmitters (substances that nerves use to send messages to one another) helping nerves to communicate.
These chemical changes observed in headache sufferers may cause, or be caused by, muscle tension. It is possible that tensed muscles in the neck and scalp may trigger a headache in someone with altered neurochemical levels or, on the other hand, the neck and scalp muscles may be tensing in response to these neurochemical changes. It is understood that the varying levels of these chemicals are thought to activate pain pathways to the brain and also to actually interfere with the brain's own ability to suppress the pain. By adopting the benefits of massage therapy, muscle tension can be eased thus reducing the causes of headaches.
As headaches often result from or involve pain referred from problems associated with the bones and muscles in the neck, shoulder, and back, massage focusing on the cervical spine (the vertebrae in the neck behind the skull) can help to relieve headache pain. Shiatsu massage, a technique originated in Japan whereby pressure applied by the fingers, thumb and palm of the hand to acupuncture points, can have a beneficial effect to reduce the headache pain. Another therapeutic touch technique that seems to help sufferers is known as the Trager Approach. This techniques uses massage to literally stretch the body's muscles and joint in order to enhance relaxation.
Some tension headaches may be relieved by a specific form of massage therapy called trigger point therapy (TrP). Trigger point therapy is the application of pressure to specific points such as along the trapezius muscles (the muscles extending from the base of the skull to mid-back located along the spine) and sternocleidomastoid muscles (muscles on either side of the neck). This pressure interrupts the nerve signals that not only cause the headache pain but also create the trigger point. This massage therapy aims to relieve pain and to re-educate the muscles so they assume healthy positions and postures that do not generate pain. The beneficial effect of the manipulation of the body's muscles through massage is a recognised method of treating the causes of headaches through natural methods. Whether a full soothing body massage or therapy concentrating on the back and neck, facial or head, the techniques used can reduce stress levels and improve blood circulation leaving the person feeling relaxed and refreshed.
Imagine you could heal, improve, relieve, relax, even arouse just with the power of your hands? The beneficial effects of the various massage therapies available are too often ignored as a natural method of easing common ailments. Anyone can learn the basics of massage and the rewards are fantastic. Discover how you can harness the power of your hands and be able to massage with confidence at http://www.massagedvd.info

What is a Deep Tissue Massage? And What Does it Help With?

Label:

Most people who have had an oil based massage have probably received Swedish or Holistic massage, a general, full body relaxation massage. It is very soothing, but works on the superficial layers of the body. It does not get into the deeper layers of muscle, especially those tight, tense and hardened areas - like those knots that cause chronic pain and tension.
When we wish for a more focused, deeper and therapeutic massage, to alleviate a particular muscular condition that is causing pain, dysfunction and stress, Deep Tissue massage is the perfect choice.
Deep Tissue massage works with a therapeutic intention in mind, for instance restoring normal functioning to a stiff, painful neck. Within a single session, it is likely that only the area of concern will be treated, alongside related parts of the body that could be indirectly at the root cause of the condition experienced. It is recommended that regular sessions are taken, and over a series of massages, it is likely that all major parts of the body will be treated to re-establish muscular and postural alignment, and therefore improved performance and ease of the body.
• The massage itself is made up of slow, deep strokes that stretch and re-align the fibres of the muscles, and also uses compressions to reduce knots in the muscles • Unlike Swedish massage, only a little oil or cream is used to facilitate straightening and aligning of the muscles • Stretches are used also, to again lengthen muscle fibres and increase the range of movement in the joints • When the muscles are in poor condition, it may cause some discomfort, which is normal. But with the strokes being slow and applied with sensitivity, the massage is always adapted to your stated pain thresholds, and will never leave you bruised or in pain the next day
What in particular can Deep Tissue massage help with?
• It treats all musculo-skeletal and related conditions • It can help to alleviate upper back, neck and shoulder tension, pain and stiffness • Treats lower back pain and weakness, sciatica and all hip and pelvic pain and misalignment • Treats muscular, tension related headaches • Aids in recovery from illness, surgery and trauma from accidents • Improves poor posture
Though Deep Tissue massage treats just the muscles and other soft tissues of the body, it can have a very beneficial affect on the whole. The structures of the muscles are closely connected with the organs, blood vessels and all the other structures of the body, so it is common to experience improvements in your health you may not associate with your muscles, such as relief from asthma or sluggish digestion.
Additionally, relief from chronic pain and tension, and a more easy and aligned movement of your body will affect a calmer, happier and clearer mind. It is also an enjoyable and rejuvenating time out from a busy and pressured lifestyle.

Shiatsu - A Timeless and Effective Massage Therapy Technique

Label: ,

In a massage school in Maui , Hawaii , a group of students are gathered around their teacher as he performs the steps in shiatsu massage. The teacher executes several movements that are basic in a shiatsu massage. These include pressing, tapping, squeezing, and rubbing some of the patient's body parts. To the untrained eye, it would seem that the teacher just randomly touches or squeezes here and there, when in truth, these actions were planned beforehand. As he is doing this, he is also telling his students the history of shiatsu massage and how it became one of the most effective and popular massage therapy styles or techniques known today.
The technique being taught in a massage school in Maui, Hawaii actually originated in oriental Japan . Shiatsu is a Japanese traditional hands-on technique of therapy. The accepted founder is said to be Tokujiro Namikoshi. When Namikoshi was but a boy, he found out that by applying pressure on his mother's joints and then rubbing them, he was able to alleviate the pain she felt caused by arthritis.
This encouraged Namikoshi to pursue the study of the technique he discovered. He called it "Shiatsu" because in the Japanese language, "shi" means "finger" while "atsu" means pressure. Because of his perseverance, he was able to build the Shiatsu Institute of Therapy in Hokkaido in 1925, and later on, the Japan Shiatsu School after the technique became accepted and licensed. In Japan, shiatsu is widely promoted and supported by the government. Because of this, many people were encouraged to study shiatsu.
The graduates of the Japan Shiatsu School are responsible for the spread of the technique all over the world. Not only that, shiatsu gained popularity when Namikoshi himself treated important or famous personages such as Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida, Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe, and champion boxer Muhammad Ali.
Shiatsu, as a technique, is one that needs careful and dedicated studying. Shiatsu is done by using one's fingers, palms, and especially the thumbs, to find irregularities in the patient's body and heal or correct them. The benefits that shiatsu has been known to induce include the relaxation of muscles, the reduction of stress, and the improvement of blood circulation, among others. Aside from these, shiatsu has also been known to heal specific illnesses such as arthritis.
The effectiveness of the shiatsu technique coupled with its illustrious and much documented history has gained it many followers until today. It is no wonder that shiatsu is taught not only in a massage school in Maui , Hawaii , but also in other massage schools in the world.

3 Tips to Get the Best Massage Therapy Clinics

Label: ,

Massage therapy is becoming so popular that is seems everybody has at least tried it at some point. Even celebrities are scheduling weekly, even daily, appointments. The masses of America are getting with the program. Are there results? Massage clinics seem to be sprouting up on every block.
With all the massage therapy clinics to choose from it may be hard to decide which one you should go to. Many of the clinics are only running to be complacent with the current fad and do not really have trained and qualified massage therapists. Therefore, a consumer must be shrewd and separate the real clinics from the fakes. If you are looking into massage therapy, you may find the three tips below to be helpful in making your decision.
1. Go for the Tried and Tested
The first clinics to consider should be those that others have tried and who have received positive reviews. You may find that these are a little expensive; but you will be getting a safe and effective massage. Massage that is done correctly will alleviate symptoms and greatly aid in relaxation. An improperly performed massage will cause many health problems and may cause skin bruising, bone injuries, blood clots, blood pressure problems, and even sprains or tissue damage.

Simply ask for referrals from friends and family of yours and of who you know that use massage therapy. People who receive massage therapy on a weekly basis will definitely be able to provide you with some recommendations.
2. Join Internet Forums

If you need to travel or find a clinic away from your community, this would be a great way to check out businesses where you intend to be staying.
3. Try It Out
If you are truly adventurous and have the funds to spare, you could sample services yourself. You may come across a few not-so-great clinics before you find the really good ones. Even if you receive terrible service from one location, at least you have tried the services out and know what to expect from them. Don't be afraid to continue your quest with other clinics until you find the one that is right for you.
Of course you should expect to research a little about the clinics you try before hand. This way you will avoid the fake ones and only give your business to the real ones. Be discriminate about the services of clinics and private practitioners in your area before trying them out. Be sure to check the place out, ask about their different techniques, and even see of you can have a demonstration. You may decide to research the different oils and products they use on their clients. The more you learn about the massage therapy clinic the better assured you will at get the best out of it.

3. Alternatively try using a wooden back massage roller or wriggle around with your back against a rolling pin.
Self massage - Scalp
1. Massage your scalp as if shampooing your hair.
2. Lock your fingers on to your scalp and move it over your skull. These movements increase the blood circulation and done regularly will improve the condition of your hair.
3. Gently tug sections of your hair all over your head. Finish your self massage by lying down completely relaxing hands open at your sides and breathing deeply for a minute or two. Lymphatic Massage For Beauty Inside As Well As Out!

Label: ,

When a family member of mine was diagnosed with lymphoma, a large marble sized rock hard lump in the neck, it was such a shock! The difficult part after that was trying to figure out the best course of action. We have always leaned towards natural remedies and we were thankfully steered towards a naturopath that did lymphatic massage, ionic foot baths and pure vitamins, minerals and herbs.
Here is what I learned about the lymphatic system:
The lymphatic system is closely related to the circulatory system. You could consider that you have red blood and white blood, the white being the lymphatic system. It works like this;
Red blood cells carry oxygen and nutrients to all the cells of the body. The blood picks up impurities as well. These impurities must go somewhere. This is where the lymphatic system comes in. These impurities, such as, proteins, viruses, bacteria, cancer cells etc., get absorbed into the plasma, (the white blood I mentioned earlier, which is the lymphatic liquid) and are filter by the lymph nodes throughout the body. The job of the lymphatic system is to safely eliminate these impurities.
If the lymphatic system gets damaged or blocked then your immune system cannot function at its optimum. As an example, a free flowing river moves unobstructed and reaches the desired destination, but if you have obstruction and the water pools and is slow moving picking up more and more debris, it may or may not get to where it needs to go and gets more and more clogged. Your lymphatic system can get this way if you do not take care of it.
There are things you can do to prevent or unclog blocked lymph nodes. You can go to a licensed massage therapist that is trained in lymph massage. *Note, lymphatic system is very close to the surface of the skin so massage is a very light pressure, almost no indentation under the skin. Too much pressure can damage the lymph system. Proper massage can increase circulation and increase blood flow and oxygen to the body increasing the bodies own defenses.
Lymphatic massage machines can penetrate under the skin, and oxygenate the system, increasing circulation, unclog blockages, help to regenerate cells and assist in smoothing out skin from wrinkles and blemishes. For a body to be in balance the lymphatic system must flow freely.
When my family member received lymph massage it was incredible. As soon as the massager was placed around the infected area, she would immediately start to drain. Her eyes would water and her nose would run and you could hear gurgling sounds in her neck. Eventually the large blockage was gone and she has had a clean bill of health now for the past 4 years.
I also saw before and after pictures of a women who had lymphedema (severe swelling in her legs). Lymph massage treatments cleared the obstruction and all the swelling in her legs went down over time to almost normal. The before and after pictures were incredible! I would have loved to meet this women but she was done long before we arrived for treatment. I still think about her sometimes.
I know lymphatic massage works because I have seen it with my own eyes. Also, a wonderful byproduct of using a lymph massage is that it can help clear up the complexion because it thoroughly oxygenates the skin and is used in salons and day spas around the county.
Whether you need assistance with a sluggish lymphatic system or you want to improve a skin condition, consider lymphatic massage.
Beauty is best if it is both inside and out!

10 Tips For Giving a Relaxing Massage to Your Partner

Label: ,

A relaxation massage can help create a loving, healing bond between partners, whether it is between parent and child, husband and wife, or lovers. Before you begin, be sure you have a quiet space in a darkened room where you will be undisturbed.
Most people enjoy soothing relaxation music playing in the background. Some like scented oils or candles, and some enjoy warm rocks placed on the back in between massage of different areas of the body.
1. You need an appropriate surface for your partner to lie on. This will not be a relaxing massage if your partner is nervous about the sturdiness of the table or if you need to move around a lot from one side to the other because the surface is too big. A narrow table is perfect.
2. Make sure your partner is comfortable, with enough cushioning underneath, a small pillow or rolled up towel if the head needs support, and a sheet or towels to cover whatever parts of the body are not being massaged at the current time. This will insure that sufficient warmth and security are maintained. Insecurity about being undressed is not conducive to relaxation either - this may be the case if you are massaging a baby.
3. Most of us carry a lot of tension in our necks and shoulders. These will be focus points for the relaxation massage. However, ask your partner if there are other places s/he would like you to pay particular attention to. Some people carry tension in their hands, others in their legs.
It is appropriate to ask for feedback as you proceed. You can, however, learn a lot by paying attention to body language as you massage different areas. Your baby may fall asleep or smile, your partner may give out a big sigh. Watch for these and other signs of deep relaxation and know that you may have "touched a chord".
4. A relaxing massage is not a deep massage. Mostly you will be stroking, gently pressing and squeezing, and gently manipulating. Even when you are walking from one side of the table to the other, always keep one hand on your partner's body. It is more relaxing for your partner, who probably will have her eyes closed, to always feel your touch than to be startled by your touch suddenly seeming to "come out of nowhere".
5. Stand beside your partner, who should be lying chest down on the table. Begin by placing one hand lightly on the back of the head and gently massaging one side of the head with the other hand, moving your hand in a circular motion.
Stroke the forehead, cheek, nose, mouth and chin. Gently squeeze the ear and press all over the head, including behind the ear.
6. Use the same circular motion to massage the neck and apply gentle pressure around the base of the skull.
7. With both hands, massage the shoulders as if you were kneading bread. Apply pressure with the heels of both hands, gently moving from the lower shoulders towards the neck, then giving a gentle squeeze at the tops of the shoulders.
8. Again using the circular motion, begin at the lower back and massage up towards the shoulder blades. Gently hold one of your partners hands in your left hand (if you are right-handed) and place your partner's hand just above her waist. While holding her hand there, press gently under the shoulder blade with your fingers of your right hand.
If you are holding your partner's left hand, apply the pressure under her left shoulder blade.
9. Now apply these same techniques to the arms and legs. Circular motions, gentle squeezing, and simply holding each finger and toe separately and gently squeezing are extremely relaxing. Your partner may be ticklish, or may ask for more pressure, so be aware and don't be afraid to ask.
Always start your massage at the extremities and work towards the heart - this stimulates circulation and helps increase lymphatic flow. Towards the heart ensures that no pressure of blood is being pushed against closed valves, which could cause damage to blood vessels. There is little or no danger of this in a light relaxation massage, but it is wise to mention it anyways.
10. Finish the massage by lightly brushing over your partner's skin with your fingertips, away from the heart and towards the extremities, as if you were collecting and brushing lightly away any and all negative energies. End each long movement away from the heart by gently shaking your hands free of all these energies.
That's it. Your partner may be asleep, having received perhaps the most wonderful relaxation massage of his or her life! Gently place a light blanket over your partner, and you're done.

Reflexology Massage

Label: , ,

Reflexology therapy is a type of relaxation massage technique that is applied on the feet to release the stress and keep them healthy. Reflexology treatment is basically one kind of complementary therapy as it often heals the congestion if any in various parts of the body. This is quite gentle and aids in restoring the natural balance of the entire body. Acupressure massage and hand reflexology are also types of Reflexology therapy. Reflexology treatment is not at all an alternative to conventional treatment which is offered when there is life threatening medical problems. This is by no means capable of diagnosing the problem or prescribing any treatment for these. Still this is extremely popular among people who like the idea of getting complementary treatments. How does it work? The commonest forms of reflexology treatment are hand Reflexology and foot Reflexology. Here the hands and the feet are stimulated with the application of pressure movements and it aids in increasing the blood circulation and also increases the muscular functions at times. In fact most of the people do not understand the fact that feet and hand are equally sensitive like the other parts of the body.
Hence they ac can also get stressed. The professional reflexologists are capable of identifying the delicate changes that occur in particular points of the feet as well as the hands while performing the hand reflexology and foot massage. This also creates some changes to the other organs that are linked to these parts of the body. It can also have positive effect in improving the self-esteem and confidence of an individual as they maintain the physical as well as emotional balance of the body.
The nerves that connect different areas of the body run through the soles of the feet. As the pressure is mainly applied on the feet these nerves experience relaxation. If there is any blockage in any part of the body, that also gets released through the Reflexology therapy. The reflexologists often use their fingers to create this pressure. But they can also use simple tools like wooden sticks. In acupressure massage technique small pins are used to stimulate the reflex points as a part of reflexology treatment.
Sometimes creams or lotions are also used while the foot massage. The gloves, shoes and socks need to be removed during the massage session. Benefits of Reflexology therapy The best part of this method is that this can be applied on anybody irrespective of the physical conditions there are no adverse side effects of this method. The people who are suffering from problems related to extra stress can be treated with this massage technique. You will surely get sound sleep after few sessions of this massage. Severe back ache, migraine headaches can be treated with this therapy. The digestive disorders can be treated was effectively as the hormonal unbalances. Often it is said that the problems like infertility can also be treated in this process. Hence you can try this out as an alternative way to comfort yourself.

The Fundamentals of Massage As Therapy

Label:

When we talk about the therapeutic benefits of massage, you often hear about different massage styles and techniques. Deep Tissue, Thai, and Sports are some examples.
However, massage is therapeutic on a more basic level. This is often overlooked.
The perfect massage for your ails. As a therapist, I am always trying to match the right technique with each client's needs. I have advanced certifications in several different styles, so I easily pick and choose what the client's body cues me to do.
However, sessions didn't always follow this pattern of technique-matching. When I first began practicing massage therapy, I was keener to the deeply therapeutic effects of basic human touch. I saw this basic need and its healing effects. I practiced it, first and foremost.
As I become increasingly skilled, it requires more effort to continually go back to the fundamentals. Probably the most therapeutic feature of a good massage is the touch itself. A caring, conscientious touch from a therapist is more important than any skill they have learned from any instructor.
Back to basics. Some clients avoid telling therapists that they want a Swedish massage. They don't understand that Swedish strokes are the foundation of most other massage, and that Swedish can be performed lightly or firmly. You can barely leave Swedish effleurage or petrissage out of any massage session, and the pressure is not the same as the technique.
When humans practice very basic, instinctive, types of human touch, it often resembles Swedish-style effleurage.
A fundamental massage, consisting of basic strokes, is common in massage research. Health practitioners know the links between child development and touch. They have also revealed how stress relief prevents disease, and how massage can contribute to health improvements.
In conclusion, it is tempting (as a client or therapist) to figure out which type of massage you want. But don't forget to include a good ole-fashioned basic massage in your health practices.

How Prenatal Massage Can Enhance Your Pregnancy and Restore Your Self-Confidence

Label: , ,

During your pregnancy, your body continuously transforms. This can be downright shocking to a new mother. You may feel out of control, physically.
Getting a prenatal massage has many health benefits, and even some that are not as obvious. First, it offers relief from:
*Muscle soreness*Back strain*Swelling, circulation issues*Fatigue and poor sleep*Increased physical demands*Emotional stress
However, there are other benefits to pregnancy massage that are unique to a pregnant woman's body.
Once a woman is pregnant, her attention becomes shared. She now has the distraction of her child's welfare. Her needs get put second. Massage restores the attention to the woman's mental and physical needs.
As a woman's body changes during pregnancy, her self-image changes. She may forget what it's like to have a lighter, fit, un-pregnant body. This is especially true if she bears several children consecutively.
Her self-esteem also may change. More focus gets put on the baby from family, friends and co-workers. She may feel less valuable, and less attractive, despite the beauty of the process.
A massage from a caring therapist can restore good feelings of confidence and self-worth.
The pregnant client and therapist marvel together in the body's amazing capabilities. The pregnant woman is reminded that all bodies are amazing, powerful and beautiful.
She is also reminded that she will have a time when her body is not pregnant. The focus on her individual health needs can be hers alone one day.
The mere essence of human touch has the power to restore a sense of worth and belonging to someone who may be feeling detached and blue.
It's time to restore your body, after pregnancy, and your muscles feel weary. Then go Grab your copy of the '10-Day Support & Coaching Guide to Pain Relief'. It's loaded with natural relief tips, videos and articles, conveniently emailed to you.

Massage Therapist Compensation

Label: , ,

You've completed training, finished your clinicals, have your license or certification, have your professional liability insurance and are ready to begin your job search as a massage therapist. You begin interviewing and you are confused because your compensation offers vary from employer to employer. You're an employee or you're an independent contractor. You're paid a percentage or you're paid hourly. Determining your compensation plan and contractual arrangements with an employer can be confusing.
There are many areas to take into consideration prior to determining an appropriate compensation arrangement. Are clients provided for you by the business or do you find your own? Are you providing equipment and supplies for services or is the business? Are you or the business responsible for marketing material costs such as business cards and brochures? Are you or the business handling phone call inquiries and scheduling? Are you paid hourly or by the client? Are you an employee or independent contractor?
Clearly the more expense and responsibility you take on, the higher your compensation should be. For a massage therapist providing their own marketing materials, managing phone inquiries and scheduling, actively networking and advertising, and providing their own supplies, an appropriate compensation is fifty percent and the possibility of capping out at a monthly rent amount should be considered. Don't forget the landlord or owner of the business you are utilizing space from is responsible for the lease, rent, utilities, common areas, and insurance whether you have a client or not. It is appropriate to have a set rent amount for you to pay on a monthly basis or have a high commission split to ensure the business owner covers their costs.
The less expenses and responsibility you take on, the lower your compensation should be. For a massage therapist working in a business that is providing all marketing, scheduling, equipment, supplies and the customer base, a massage therapist should expect to earn forty percent or less. Guaranteed compensation by the hour at a low hourly rate is also appropriate.
Another area to consider to determine your compensation and costs is client retention. If you are expected to market and take on all costs or a portion of the costs for marketing, you should be able to solicit clients to follow you to another location if you were to move on. However, if the business you are working with is paying for all marketing materials, networking organizations, etc., then it is appropriate for the business to maintain the relationship with the client even if you offer some marketing support such as participating in an event to promote your services.
Look at each employment opportunity and weigh out your risks and responsibilities when negotiating your compensation. Most importantly it is critical to have everything written in an agreement to ensure compensation and responsibilities are understood.
Armed with this information, you'll know the correct questions to ask during an interview and have the ability to negotiate an arrangement both you and your employer are comfortable with.

Swedish Massage and Its Elements

Label: , ,

Massage has been around since the beginning of time. Massage and healing has a long and interesting history. There are currently over 75 different types of massage healing work and body work. What is very interesting about massage is that it is instinctive. It is natural to rub out our aches and pains. Massage has a long list of benefits. Some of those are any where from preventing injury to slowing the progress of an illness to rehabilitation and as simple as relaxation.
The most popular massage in the western world is Swedish massage. Swedish massage is a systematic and scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body. The purpose of this massage is for maintaining good health. Swedish massage is often described as organized and intentional touch. The movements of the therapist are intentional and require knowing how the body responses to the scientific application of massage.
Massage therapy is not only a science but an art and a two way conversation. The person giving the massage will 'read' the body, find the spots that deserve attention. Meanwhile to person getting a massage can direct the massage therapist to specific spots. The best way to get proficient at giving a massage is to practice. Several factors must be considered for each massage; intention, touch, pressure and depth, direction, speed, and sequence. Each will be discussed further below.
Intention - The intention of the session is one of the most important questions. Does the person deserve to relax, wake up, sooth an injury, or relieve stress. Touch - Touch before and after a massage can provide a moment of connection between both parties. Pressure and Depth - Pressure is the amount of force applied to the body while depth is how far you push into the body. Pressure and depth will vary or every person. Direction - Down and forward, inward and up, back and forth; each direction will provide different pressure, depth, and sensations. Speed - Rapid movements will stimulate, while slow movements will relax. Sequence - The order of strokes and speed to cater to each specific clients desires.

Discover the Different Massage Types

Label: , , , ,

The standard massage treatment has flourished recently to include much more specific treatments concentrating on various areas of the body. You may not be aware that there is most probably a massage treatment for your particular ailment.
Swedish massage therapy: This is the most common type to be offered by masseurs because it is very gentle and relaxing. The masseuse will use long strokes, kneading and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil. The result is a refreshed, calm and renewed feeling for the body.
Aromatherapy: The reason why it is called such is because one or more scented plant oils are used during the session. During the session, you will select the oil you want to use. In fact, the most popular one is lavender as it is well suited for stress related conditions together with an emotional component.
Hot stone massage: Heated smooth stones are placed on certain parts of the body to help loosen those tight muscles and balance energy points in the body. At times, the masseuse may also apply gentle pressure especially for those who have muscle tension.
Deep tissue massage: The massage technique is specifically designed to target the deep layers of body muscle and connective tissue. Here, the masseuse will use slow strokes better known as friction techniques across the grain of the muscle. The distinctive feature of deep tissue massage is that it is used on those that have chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems and recovery from injury. You will often feel sore for the next day or two.
Shiatsu: This massage therapy originated from Japan. Here, the masseuse will use localised finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians. Each point is held for 2 to 8 second designed to improve the flow of energy and help the body regain balance. Those who have tried it say that it is relaxing yet firm. The best part is that there is no soreness afterwards.
Thai: This is similar to Shiatsu because it aligns the energies of the body using gentle pressure on specific points. Part of the session also includes compressions and stretches as you are moved in a variety of postures just like yoga but in this case, you don't do anything except go with the flow.
Pregnancy: For women that are expecting, they can opt for a specialist pregnancy massage. The benefits it was designed for are the relief of aches and pains, reduce swelling, relieve stress and reduce the ailments of anxiety and depression.
Reflexology: The can also be known as foot massage as the procedure involves applying pressure to parts of the foot. It is believed that the foot in fact corresponds to certain body organs and systems so if this is worked on therefore the whole body will benefit.
Sports: This is designed for people involved in sports activities. This type is designed not only for professional athletes but anyone involved in sport since it helps prevent and treat physical injuries.
Back & Neck: Unlike reflexology that focuses on the feet because it represents special points in the body, this one simply relieves tension in the back and neck caused by lifting heavy objects or driving for long periods of time.

Losing Fat With Massages

Label: , ,

You've lost dozens of pounds dieting and exercising. Yet, when you look at yourself in the mirror, you wonder why you still appear 'fat.' What else needs to be done to get you the firm body you deserve? Perhaps the answer to this question can be found at the massage parlor.
That's right... you can actually use massages to help lose fat. Why? Well, when a person gets a massage, everything in that area gets loosened up. As a result, oxygen can flow better through the body's cells. And, when the oxygen reaches adipose tissue, fat breaks up, making their metabolism much easier.
Now, you might be wondering what type of massages people need to get to lose fat. The best ones are those that are vigorous. Slower massages won't work as well, because they won't stimulate the blood flow fast enough.
You can also consider hot stone therapy. What is hot stone therapy? Basically, it is a type of massage where heated stones are used instead of a person's hands. The results are phenomenal because it applies massaging action as well as heat to a person's skin and muscles. This intensifies blood flow, allowing even more oxygen to get to the fat.
However, be aware that in the United States, hot stone therapy is relatively new. So, not all massage therapists will be able to do it. That's why you should probably ask ahead of time if a spa or parlor offers that type of service. If they don't, you can find a plethora of others online or in your local phone book.
Of course, don't think that hot stone therapy or any other type of massage is going to work miracles. Yes, massages do make it easier to lose fat, but if you don't continue to diet and exercise nothing will happen. Ultimately, it's important to view massages as an aid to weight loss, not a cure.
TIR Massage Stone is the market leader in Massage stone supply. This enterprise was born out of the desire to provide a high quality product at an affordable price.

Massaging Oils - The Smooth Secret to Better Massage

Label: , , ,

So you read a book on Massage and you're ready to try it out tonight on your girlfriend. The techniques are fresh in your mind and you want to do a good job to help your partner relax a little. Well, there is something else you should do first. You should get a selection of Massaging oils ready to use. If you haven't used them before, don't worry, it's not that hard to find them. If you are lucky, and live in a large metropolitan area, go to the large retail stores like Wal-Mart or K-Mart perhaps. Sometimes they have pre-mixed oils for massage. If not, they have a selection of fragrances and essential oils in the Women's Department. Try something you like. You can make your own massage oils by using an essential oil to add scent to your base massaging oil. There are two kinds of oils commonly used in Massage.
The first kind is a mineral oil. These oils are readily available at large Drug Stores. The other kind, my personal favorite, is a regular vegetable oil. Take your pick of olive oil, safflower oil, whichever you feel the most comfortable with. My favorite is safflower oil. To give it a scent, I get oil of clove from my local CVS drug store. But you can use any scent that you like . Some suggestions are Patchouli oil, Cinnamon oil or a delightful one from India, I think. It's called Frangipani. Go to the Cosmetics area of the big Drug Stores and get a few plastic squeeze bottles with a narrow hole on top. Use these to dispense the oil into your hands. You should never, as a rule, squirt the oil directly on your partner. Always put it in your palm, first. Then rub your hands together a few times to spread the oil and to warm it up. You want this to be a sensory experience to remember, not a shock.
Now that you have your oils prepared. There are a few tips to mention here. If you are doing a whole body massage and will use a lot of oil, then it's a good idea to prepare two bottles of oil for each of the scents you have chosen. The reason? well, think about it. If you are moving back and forth over a large area, as you do with a whole body massage, you will save unneccesary going back and forth trying to get the bottle that somehow is always at the other end of your partner. When you start a massage, you should try to maintain contact with your partner all the way through the massage. If you have to stop to get the bottle, it can be awkward and sometimes unsettling. So use two of each to prevent that. Also, don't use too much oil at once. A teaspoon at a time should be enough for a fairly large spot to massage. If you need more, like for example, massaging a hairy back or chest, apply more in small amounts. There should not be any pooling of oil on the one being massaged. Don't pour the oil into your palm over your partner, do it by their side. You can still maintain contact with your partner with the under part of your forearm or maybe an elbow.
When you are done, and you can hear the smile of your partner, ask him or her to give you a massage, also. First, you will love it. Second, you will be able to feel what works best and how light or heavy to rub. It will give you insight into your next venture into the world of massage.
I want to take the time, here, to point out that I am not a licensed masseuse. I am not a professional. I do, however, consider myself a gifted amateur and someone who loves to be massaged, too. So, be cautious at first, until you learn a little about what your partner likes and how hard to rub. It's not that hard and it feels great. In some cases, it's even a health benefit to the object of your massage. And one other thing, your pets love to be massaged, too!

Massage Therapists - Tips For Mobile Massage Safety

Label: , , ,

For many clients the idea of having a massage therapist come to them is appealing. They do not have to drive or deal with parking on their way to or from their appointment and they are able to relax immediately after the appointment. As a massage therapist, providing services to these clients can be lucrative. However, concern for your safety may limit you from offering these services. We employ many therapists across the country to meet the demand of mobile massage services and recommend the following tips to help ensure their safety.
Your company image is important to ensure both you and the clients are comfortable with your business relationship. Professionalism in your advertisements, phone consultations, and marketing materials will project the services you provide.
Have a safety person you contact to provide names, addresses, and phone numbers of the client you will be visiting. Explain to them you'll call them when you arrive and when you leave so they will know where you are.
Once you have a client's name, research them on the internet. Conduct a search on their name and go to sites like peoplefinders.com to determine if they reside at the address provided or your local sexual predator lists to determine if there are any areas of concern.
Consider processing payments by credit card over the phone in advance so that you are not carrying cash with you on appointments.
Personally, I have found visiting clients in their homes provides another level of interest to client relationships. I have the opportunity to meet family members, see their environment and lifestyle which assists in assessments and recommendations, and reduce my overhead costs not having to maintain an office.
As a mobile massage therapist, you have a great service to provide and keeping your safety as a priority is critical.

Unique Form of Massage Therapy - Aromatherapy

Label: , ,

Aromatherapy is unique form of message therapy because it utilizes unique essential and aromatic oils during the therapy session. During any single session the therapist may choose one or more from a selection of over 90 aromatherapy essential oils. These essential oils have been used for centuries to promote psychological and physical benefits to the body.
Many of the bases used during the aroma therapy sessions include natural ingredients such as dried herbs, milk powders, hydrosols, sea salts, sugars, clays, and even mud baths. Using synthetic ingredients is generally frowned upon.
Aroma therapy techniques are widely practiced in both the United States and across Europe. Normally they are integrated right into other holistic treatments. In addition to the application of essential oil products, aromatherapy can also include candles, bath salts, massage oils, and even rubs which can all be used in your home.
Home treatment kits can be purchased or you can make your own. These usually include massage oils, essential oils, bath salts, lotion bases, candles, and diffusers. Most of the products come in very small bottles or jars and can be easily stored in a small sealed box. The bottles should all be labeled and it would be a great idea to purchase a book to go with your kit. If you are not familiar with a particular product you can always research it. Reference guides are kept near essential oil display shelves and can easily be found online. Most stores have tester bottles left out for customers to smell or try.
You do not need to use very much of the oils to achieve great results. Essential oils are extremely concentrated forms and they do need to be diluted before using them. You will only need to add between 2 to 10 drops of the oils to your application methods, massage oils, lotions, candles, diffusers, bath water, etc. You may even hold your head over a steaming bowl of water or create a tent effect with a towel. Simply inhale the fumes. Oils can also be added to baths, your favorite lotion, compresses, room diffusers, or diluted with light olive oil and misted onto or applied to the skin.
Aromatherapy is not designed to cure any type of illness it is only designed to alleviate symptoms and promote relaxation. It has been known to aid in the relief of minor problems. Before you try aroma therapy you should consult with your doctor.
If you do decide to utilize the services of a massage therapist, talk to the practitioner before you begin your session and discuss your medical history and any current conditions. This vital information will help hem select the best essential oils to be used in your treatments session.
Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use aromatherapy as a treatment. Many of the essential oils may be harmful to the fetal development or nursing baby and many more have unknown side effect to infants.
If you wish to learn more about aroma therapy, there are many websites which provide valuable information. If you would like a deeper understanding, simply purchase a reference guide and study materials or take some classes at your local adult Ed or community college. There are some online courses available.
Aromatherapy is thought to aid people psychologically and physically because the scents can alter brain chemistry to produce desired effects. These effects may bring therapeutic relief according to the oils used and the person's body and brain chemistry. One example is eucalyptus oil, which helps to alleviate congestion in some people. Lavender also aids others to relax and helps to detoxify.
The oils can be inhaled or applied to the skin. When they are applied to the skin they are instantly absorbed into the blood stream and become an aid in certain health and beauty applications.
If you take classes to learn more about aroma therapy you can expect them to be a little pricey. Single day classes which give a good basic overview can usually cost about $75 to $125. To become certified in aromatherapy you can expect initial introductory classes to start at about $500. These classes include books and tuition, but sometimes not the oils. These classes teach more about mixing oils and creating different products as well as applications for ailments.

The Benefits of Massage

Label: , ,

We massage ourselves nearly every day. The natural reaction to reach out and touch a painful part of the body forms the basis of massage. As long ago as 3000 BC massage was used as a therapy in the Far East, making it one of the oldest treatments used by humans. In 5 BC in ancient Greece, Hippocrates recommended that to maintain health, a massage using oils should be taken daily after a perfumed bath. Greek physicians were well used to treating people who suffered from pain and stiffness in the joints. The relaxation and healing powers of massage have been well documented over the past 5000 years.
The therapeutic value of applying oils and rubbing parts of the body to lessen pain and prevent illness was recognised amongst the ancient Mediterranean civilisations. In ancient times scented oils were almost always used when giving massages, creating an early form of aromatherapy massage.
Massage increased in popularity when, in the 19th century, Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish fencing master and academic, created the basis for what is now known as Swedish massage. Swedish massage deals with the soft tissues of the body. It is a combination of relaxing effects and exercises that work on the joints and muscles but it is still based on the form that was practised in ancient times. More recently, a work was published in the 1970's called The Massage Book by George Downing and this introduced a new concept in the overall technique of massage, that the whole person's state should be assessed by the therapist and not solely the physical side. The emotional and mental states should be part of the overall picture. Also combined in his form of massage were the methods used in reflexology and shiatsu and this was known as therapeutic massage. The aim of this is to use relaxation, stimulation and invigoration to promote good health.
Massage is commonly used to induce general relaxation, so that any tension or strain experienced in the rush of daily life can be eased and eliminated. It is found to be very effective, working on the mind as well as the body. It can be used to treat people with hypertension, sinusitis, headaches, insomnia and hyperactivity, including people who suffer from heart ailments or circulatory disorders. At the physical level, massage is intended to help the body make use of food and to eliminate the waste materials, as well as stimulating the nervous and muscular system and the circulation of blood. Neck and back pain are conditions from which many people suffer, particularly if they have not been sitting correctly, such as in a slightly stooped position with their shoulders rounded. People whose day to day work involves a great deal of physical activity, such as dancers and athletes, can also derive a great deal of benefit from the use of massage. Stiffness can be a problem that they have after training or working and this is relieved by encouraging the toxins that gather in the muscles to disappear. Massage promotes a feeling of calmness and serenity and this is particularly beneficial to people who frequently suffer from bouts of depression or anxiety. Once the worry and depression have been dispelled, people are able to deal with their problems much more effectively and being able to do so will boost their self confidence.
In hospitals, massage has been used to ease pain and discomfort as well as being of benefit to people who are bedridden, since the flow of blood to the muscles is stimulated. It has also been used for those who have suffered from a heart attack and has assisted in their recovery. A more recent development has been the use of massage for cancer patients who are suffering from the after effects of treatment, such as chemotherapy, as well as the discomfort the disease itself causes. Indeed, there are few conditions when it is not recommended. It should not be used when people are suffering from inflammation of the veins, varicose veins, thrombosis or if they have a raised temperature such as occurs during a fever. It is then advisable to contact a doctor before using massage. Doctors may be able to recommend a qualified therapist, a health centre may be able to help or contact can be made with the relevant professional body.
Along with the diagnosis elements of massage there are great psychological benefits. During a massage the patient is coaxed from emotional and occupational stresses into the intense arena of the here and now. The importance of this kind of one on one non verbal communication can never be underestimated in our increasingly impersonal and detached society.
Massage has a wide range of uses for a variety of disorders. Its strengths lie in the easing of strain and tension and inducing relaxation and serenity, plus the physical contact of the therapist. Although doctors make use of this therapy in conjunction with orthodox medicine, it is not to be regarded as a cure for diseases in itself and serious problems could occur if this were the case.
Massage affects the whole body through rhythmically applied pressure. Gentle pulling and stroking movements increase the circulation of the blood and cause the blood vessels to dilate. The stimulation of nerves and blood will also affect the internal organs. Lymph is a milky white liquid that carries waste substances and toxins away from the tissues via the lymphatic system. Inactivity can cause an unhealthy build up of this substance and as the circulation of the lymph is largely dependent on muscle contractions, so massage will help speed the lymph's progress through the system. Active people can also benefit from massage as strenuous activity burns up the muscle, producing an increase of waste products in the muscle tissue. Massage will help to balance the system in both cases and can increase oxygen capacity by 10-15 per cent.
By realigning our bodies, massage can go a long way to repairing our generally damaged postures. Inactive lifestyles and sedentary occupations have created a society of people with cramped, stooped and neglected postures. Not only does massage help to coax the spine and corresponding physiology back into position, it also makes us more aware of our bodies. Relieved of muscle tension, the body feels lighter and therefore can be borne more naturally and with more poise. Used in conjunction with postural therapies such as Pilates or the Alexander technique, massage can help achieve a relaxed yet controlled posture.
Women in labour have found that the pain experienced during childbirth can be eased if massage is performed on the buttocks and back. The massage eases the build up of tension in the muscles, encouraging relaxation and easing of labour pains. It is said to be more effective on women who had previously experienced the benefits and reassurance of massage.
Many of the benefits of massage come through the healer/patient contact. Our hands are one of the most sensitive parts of the body and we experience much of our sense and touch through our hands. An experienced masseur is able is able to use his or her hands to communicate feelings of harmony and relaxation. A practised masseur will also be able to diagnose the patient through touch. He or she can 'listen' to tension and stress through the texture of the skin, knotted muscle and stiff joints. Old and current sprains, congestion and swelling should all be obvious to a good masseur. The actions of massage - the stroking, kneading and pulling - detoxify the body, improving circulation and lymphatic drainage. After tension and weakness in the body have been pinpointed and relieved, the patient is feeling relaxed and energised.
